论报复
38 “你们听过有话说：‘*以眼还眼，以牙还牙。’
39 但是我告诉你们：不要与恶人作对。有人打你的右脸，连另一边也转过去由他打。
40 有人想要告你，要拿你的里衣，连外衣也由他拿去。
41 有人强迫你走一里路，你就跟他走二里。
42 有求你的，就给他；有向你借贷的，不可推辞。”
论爱仇敌
43 “你们听过有话说：‘要爱你的邻舍，恨你的仇敌。’
44 但是我告诉你们：要爱你们的仇敌，为那迫害你们的祷告。
45 这样，你们就*可以作天父的儿女了。因为他叫太阳照好人，也照坏人；降雨给义人，也给不义的人。
46 你们若只爱那爱你们的人，有甚么赏赐呢？就是税吏不也是这样做吗？
47 你们若只请你弟兄的安，有甚么比别人强呢？就是外邦人不也是这样做吗？
48 所以，你们要完全，如同你们的天父是完全的。”
38-42 “Here’s another old saying that deserves a second look: ‘Eye for eye, tooth for tooth.’ Is that going to get us anywhere? Here’s what I propose: ‘Don’t hit back at all.’ If someone strikes you, stand there and take it. If someone drags you into court and sues for the shirt off your back, giftwrap your best coat and make a present of it. And if someone takes unfair advantage of you, use the occasion to practice the servant life. No more tit-for-tat stuff. Live generously.”
43-47 “You’re familiar with the old written law, ‘Love your friend,’ and its unwritten companion, ‘Hate your enemy.’ I’m challenging that. I’m telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God does. He gives his best—the sun to warm and the rain to nourish—to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty. If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus? Anybody can do that. If you simply say hello to those who greet you, do you expect a medal? Any run-of-the-mill sinner does that.”
48 “In a word, what I’m saying is, Grow up. You’re kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.”

以眼还眼，以牙还牙（38节）： 旧约律法中这样的要求，是为了阻绝个人的报复行为，阻断报复的恶性循环。
可以作天父的儿女（45节）： 耶稣基督的门徒既然已成为天父的儿女，爱仇敌就是门徒作神儿女的证明。
利 24:20 “以伤还伤，以眼还眼，以牙还牙。他怎样使人有残疾，也要怎样向他做。”
申 19:21 “你的眼不可顾惜，要以命偿命，以眼还眼，以牙还牙，以手还手，以脚还脚。”
耶稣告诉祂的门徒，虽然律法中有“以眼还眼，以牙还牙”这样的报复条款（参利 24:20；申19:21），然而，祂的门徒必须遵循不与恶人作对的原则。耶稣要求门徒，不仅不要与恶人作对，还要爱仇敌、为迫害我们的人祷告，禁止我们以恶报恶，并要求我们要去行善。其实，律法中的报复条款，是为了借由限制报复的程度来避免不当的报复。但耶稣强调，门徒必须要完全，因为天父是完全的。报复不但无法解决问题，甚至会导致罪恶的恶性循环，因此，若要实现公义，饶恕及宽容就是必须拥有的美德。为此，耶稣的门徒必须尽力学像天父一样完全。耶稣在十字架的道路上，也忍受了各样的藐视和侮辱，向我们展现怎样才是合神心意的义。因此，跟随耶稣的人应当心怀神的期待，尽力趋向完全。
愿我学习主的样式，去爱仇敌、为迫害我的人祷告，趋向完全的包容之爱。
