加拉太书3:15~22

律法和应许
15弟兄们,我且照着人的常话说:虽然是人的文约,若已经立定了,就没有能废弃或加增的。
 16所应许的原是向亚伯拉罕和他子孙说的。 神并不是说「众子孙」,指着许多人,乃是说「你那一个子孙」,指着一个人,就是基督。
17我是这么说, 神预先所立的约,不能被那四百三十年以后的律法废掉,叫应许归于虚空。
 18因为承受产业,若本乎律法,就不本乎应许;但 神是凭着应许把产业赐给亚伯拉罕
 19这样说来,律法是为什么有的呢?原是为过犯添上的,等候那蒙应许的子孙来到,并且是藉天使经中保之手设立的。
20但中保本不是为一面作的; 神却是一位。

21这样,律法是与 神的应许反对吗?断乎不是!若曾传一个能叫人得生的律法,义就诚然本乎律法了。
 22但圣经把众人都圈在罪里,使所应许的因信耶稣基督,归给那信的人。
The Law and the Promise
15Brothers and sisters, let me take an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or add to a human covenant that has been duly established, so it is in this case.
 16The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ.
17What I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later, does not set aside the covenant previously established by God and thus do away with the promise.
18For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on the promise; but God in his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.
19Why, then, was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was given through angels and entrusted to a mediator. 20A mediator, however, implies more than one party; but God is one.
21Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law.
22But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.

神预先所立的约(17节):指神对亚伯拉罕的应许,早于神赐给摩西的律法。
四百三十年(17节):指神给予亚伯拉罕应许,到神在西奈山上赐予摩西律法之间的时期。
罗3:20b“因为律法本是要人认识罪。”

保罗在书信中阐释,如果人是因信称义而得救,律法对人来说还有什么意义。当时,加拉太信徒受到律法主义者的影响,很可能误以为必须透过遵守律法来得救,所以这部分的论证十分重要。
保罗解释说,最初赐给人的救恩就是从应许而来(18节),而因着耶稣基督这位应许的成就者到来,律法便不再是必须的了。保罗说,律法的基本功能不是拯救,而是使人知罪;律法不是使人成义的方法,而是要使人知道自己的不义(19节;参罗3:20b)。此外,保罗清楚地解释说,即使在旧约时代,立约的选民也不是血统上的犹太人,而是相信与神所立之约的人。我们必须借着神的话语,查验自己是否拥有这样的信心。
让我们记住,律法不会引导我们成义,但可以使我们意识到自己需要救恩。信徒得救的方法只有一个,就是倚靠耶稣基督。
